Open Source GPT-4.5 From China! Ernie 4.5

The TLDR
Baidu introduced two new AI models, ERNIE 4.5 and X1, matching GPT-4.5's quality at just 1% of the cost. ERNIE is free for private users and will soon become open source for everyone.

Baidu has unveiled two impressive new AI models, ERNIE 4.5 and X1, that could change the landscape of artificial intelligence. ERNIE X1, a multimodal reasoning model, achieves the performance of DeepSeek R1 at only half the price. At the same time, ERNIE 4.5 was introduced as the latest Foundation Model with native multimodal capabilities.

Most notably, both models offer comparable quality to GPT-4.5, but cost only about 1% of what the competition charges. Pricing is aggressive – ERNIE 4.5 starts at $0.55 per million input tokens, while ERNIE X1 starts at just $0.28.

For private users, the ERNIE bot has now been made available free of charge in advance via the official website. Companies and developers can access the API services via Baidu's cloud platform Qianfan.


This development could represent a turning point: high-quality AI models are now becoming more affordable and could significantly accelerate the democratization of advanced AI technologies. Especially since Ernie will be offered open source!
