2025 – The Year of Automated AI Research Agents
"This Week in AI" is now Superintelligence.
Automated AI Research Agents Are Coming This Year!
The TLDR
AI systems are rapidly evolving from chatbots to autonomous research agents capable of conducting independent AI development. By late 2025, these systems could dramatically accelerate innovation through continuous self-improvement cycles, while working independently for extended periods.
2025 marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in AI history! We are currently experiencing the leap from simple chatbots to autonomous AI agents and powerful “reasoning models”. The breakthrough: AI can now think longer and more reliably – impressively demonstrated by OpenAIs o1 and DeepSeeks r1.
The most exciting thing is yet to come: automated researchers are coming! These AI systems can independently conduct AI research and the first prototypes could be available by the end of 2025. They will dramatically accelerate the innovation cycle – a self-reinforcing cycle of progress is just around the corner!
AI development now follows a “tick-tock” pattern – periodic scaling combined with continuous refinement. Thanks to distillation, even small models are becoming more and more powerful and affordable.
Economically revolutionary: “t-AI” agents that can work independently. Today they can work for 10-30 minutes, but by 2027 they will probably be able to work for a full 24 hours! Imagine what this means for productivity gains!
Although the computing power requirements remain high, the prospects are bright: we are at the beginning of an era in which AI will become our ultimate research partner – with limitless possibilities for science, business and society!

Atlas robot learns to run and breakdance through simulation, compressing years of training into hours. This simulation-to-reality approach dramatically accelerates robot skill development.
NVIDIA Open Sources Multilingual Speech ModelsNVIDIA open-sources Canary speech recognition models supporting multiple European languages with commercial licensing. The efficient models enable on-device processing with accurate timestamps and reduced hallucinations. | 270X Price Gap Between o1-pro and R1OpenAI's o1-pro costs 270 times more than DeepSeek-R1 despite only marginally higher performance. Are slightly higher capabilities worth such extreme costs, or are users paying primarily for brand recognition and perceived superiority? |
